Has the Future Arrived?

String theorist Michio Kaku came and spoke at my school a few weeks back.  I enjoyed his presentation enough that I waited in line for a few hours (I did bring a chair and plenty of work with me) to hear him speak again in the evening at UNR.  I didn't enjoy the later presentation as much, and now the more I listen to him the more canned he comes across to me.

This video is more or less what he shared in the presentations I attended.  I realize that he overstates the case for physics being at the heart of science and for science being essentially the engine of all progress and wealth, but it's still fun to listen to from a physics teacher's perspective.



He talks a lot about the technology of the future, which I find a bit cheesy, but seeing this preview of Google Glass makes me feel like augmented reality is right around the corner.



The developers claim that a greater integration of technology into our lives will actually help us to experience more, rather than the current trend of missing life because we're staring at screens all to often.  Interesting approach.  Stop staring at screens by having a permanent screen always in view.  Regardless, Glass looks pretty impressive.

I started watching the video, but it's pretty long, so I only watched a few minutes. Is it worth it?

2019 Stats - Solar

The downward trend continues, though it is not more than expected. And if I scale the chart from zero, the trend doesn't look nearly so precipitous. Also, I found a website where I can upload my solar data and it will add weather info. 2019 is the first year I've had this active, but I'm excited to be able to see how much the number of sunny days factors into my solar performance. Being above or below my average for a particular month was strongly correlated with the prevalence of sunny days. Overall, 78% of days were "fine" in Fernley Nevada in 2019.

Two Speeches

On Tuesday President Obama addressed the nation's youth in about as apolitical a speech as you'll find. He encouraged students to stay in school, work hard, not let their country down, etc. It was a good speech, but probably more interesting than the speech was peoples' reaction to the fact that he gave it. Aside from the individual extremists fearing their children's indoctrination, some school districts would not allow the speech to be shown, read, or assigned to be watched at home without parental permission (censorship?). Even if it were a politically charged speech, prohibiting our children from listening to our president is disturbing to me. Speech number two addressed a joint session of congress to recharge the health care reform effort. There were no bans on children watching this one, and we even had a British parlament-esque moment with the "You lie!" outburst. Books (2022 and 2023)

Getting deeper into the Cosmere with my kids during our commute to/from school. I waited for years for the library to get the audio version of American Prometheus... thank you Hollywood.  Favorite book on these lists is The Covenant of Water. 28 books both years with the total number of pages only differing by a few hundred. 2023 2022
