2016 Stats - Expenses

Top 10 Expenses By Category (percent of overall spending*)
  1. Mortgage (17%)
  2. Groceries (16%) - mostly just food
  3. Car payments (14%) - included balloon payments to payoff both cars (thanks to some inherited money)
  4. Church (13%)
  5. Taxes (10%) - federal, SS, and medicare (no state tax, not netted with refund)
  6. Utilities (6%) - phone, water, internet, natural gas, garbage, and electricity
  7. Auto (5%) - fuel, insurance, registration, repairs/maintenance
  8. Gifts (4%) - Christmas and birthdays (family and friends)
  9. Health/Life Insurance (4%)
  10. Household (3%) - electronics, decorations, kitchen/cleaning supplies, yard, furniture, etc.
*Money transferred to retirement and savings accounts was not considered as an expense.


And since I didn't look at this last year, here's 2015 for comparison.
